Artist's Comments

When I first came to Canada 1 year ago, Anna was my ESL instructor. During the courses we became friends - we discussed a lot about philosophy, politics, history and literature. I was looking forward to see her this summer, to tell her about my first year here, about what I have done, what I am going to do.

She passed away of a massive brain tumour on Sunday, May 20th. I don't even know this until yesterday, 1 hour after her memorial service, after which they'll take her to her hometown in Poland. I was not able to attend it.

This is the only thing I could do. Sorry Anna, I've never told you that I could draw - and may you forever smile, by the Lord's side.

I'm sorry about your loss. She's really beautiful in her own way, and I can tell just from your portrait that she must have had a simply infectious smile. It's truly a work of art

I am truly sorry; her smile is beautiful, and she clearly meant a lot to you.

The drawing is wonderful.

Be who you are, and speak your mind, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

I'm sorry to hear that, but it's good that you can express your gratitude through what you like to do - draw.

Its beautiful, and I'm sure wherever she is she's smiling right back at her portrait.

This is a beautiful gesture on your part, and the best thing that you can do. I understand the impact of a wonderful teacher to guide and encourage someone, and I understand how randomly this universe seems to pull people away. This is a beautiful drawing...she comes to you to look at herself through your mind.
